Gregory T. Varian
Longtime New Rochelle resident, community leader and local attorney in private practice for over 30 years, Greg Varian is an enthusiastic advocate for his profession, neighborhood and City but most of all, his clients.
Mr. Varian attended the University of Fribourg in Switzerland and Providence College in Rhode Island, where he established and directed the Campus Council. He was also General Manager of the college’s radio station, which led to a job after graduation as News Director at WKCM in Tell City, Indiana, and seven First Place Awards from the Associated Press.
Mr. Varian received his J.D. from Pace University School of Law and was admitted to the New York State Bar in 1982. A partner with the law firm of Fanelli, Varian and Staker (1986 – 1990), Greg started the Varian Law Firm in 1990 at 270 North Avenue with a diverse civil practice including real estate development, closings, zoning and land use, small business, franchising, estate planning and administration.
Under Mr. Varian’s leadership as president of the New Rochelle Bar Association (2003-2005) the Bar’s membership and influence increased, now boasting over 350 members. He is especially proud of the Bar Association’s free Continuing Legal Education programming, including a course on variances, which he teaches.
Mr. Varian regularly presents his Continuing Legal Education course on land use entitled “VARIAN on VARIANCES” to groups including the Westchester/Mid-Hudson Chapter of the American Institute of Architects and the New Rochelle Bar Association. He is an instructor in the Hudson Gateway Association of Realtors and an adjunct professor in Real Property Law at Mercy College.
Mr. Varian is also passionate about his community. A longtime supporter of the New Rochelle Public Library, Mr. Varian was elected in 2006 to serve on the NRPL Board of Trustees. Additionally, Greg served as president of the Halcyon Park Neighborhood Association from 2002 to 2004. Greg advocated for 220 households in the heart of New Rochelle, working with local businesses, Iona College and the City government to revitalize the North Avenue corridor. He has served on the Renew North Avenue and North Avenue Stakeholders Committees, seeking improvements along that thoroughfare, and he was a founding member of the Confederation of Neighborhood Associations.
In 2007, Mr. Varian was recognized by the Chamber of Commerce of New Rochelle as the “Professional of the Year”.
